Reading at St George’s

The Reading Team

Our reading team support Mrs O’Brien with lots of areas of reading within school.  They help run Reading Club once a week for those that need some extra support in their reading.  They run the school library which is open twice a day and they also read with KS1 on the playground at lunch time. They are such a great support to all those children in school and are all passionate about reading and the joy it can bring.

The Reading Team supporting children on the KS1 playground

Children in the Reading Team give up their lunch times by reading with the children on the KS1 playground. They might read to some children that need some support with reading more fluently or they may gather some children together and read a whole story to them.

World Book Day

On 7th March, we had a fantastic World Book Day at St.George’s. We started off the day with a wonderful Act of Worship by Class 6 with some great book recommendations from Mrs Holmes, Mrs O’Brien, Mrs Bennett and Mr Holmes.

This year, our focus was poetry and the performance of it. The children had a fantastic time learning the poem by heart, making props, decorating their t-shirts and then performing it to the rest of the school.

Visits to our local library

We have a great relationship with our local library – Blagreaves Community Library.

Last year there was a chance that it could be closed but, fortunately some locals have very kindly volunteered to help keep it open.

Our Upper Juniors wrote persuasive letters to the Council last year to say how important the library is to our community. We are so grateful that our children are able to visit every half term and borrow books.
